In Knokke, Belgium, Quel Homme de Hus by Quidam de Revel-Candillo (Dr Andreas Kosicki, Berlin), line 4847, and Jérôme Guéry proved with a spectacular five-star victory over 1.60 metres that they have earned their place in the Belgian Olympic team and are ready for the big event in Tokyo: “This horse is incredible,” the rider wrote on Instagram. “A magnificent performance that gives me hope for the Olympic Games next month.” The pair also took home €40,000 in prize money.
Guéry proved he has a knack for talented Holsteiners with his promising young horse Uniquo at the same competition: Riding the son of Uriko-Cancara (Günter Schüder, Bahrenfleth), line 5054, he won a 1.40-metre class. Uniquo’s granddam, Alaska II by Landgraf, produced S.I.E.C. Caro Ass, who enjoyed success at the very highest international level; a horse sired by Hym d’Cancara out of his dam, Bali II, changed hands last year via the Holsteiner Verband auction.
In Paris, the Casall daughter Hope Street, out of a Quick Nick dam (Barbara Tenge-Rietberg), line 4847, and Lucas Porter (USA) took fourth place in a 1.55-metre class. Wunschkind, another daughter of Casall, placed ninth under Eric van der Vleuten (NED). The mare is by a dam by Caletto I – who was herself successful up to 1.45 metres – bred by Reimer Hedt, Hohenaspe, and comes from line 108A.
Nane Nikolaus Dehn is the new German Junior Eventing Champion and was beaming after the final show jumping round in Kreuth at the top performances of his grey mare Zilia D by Corland-Mytens xx, bred by his grandfather Friedrich Dehn (Schwesing) from line 18B1: “She went brilliantly in the show jumping; after the first two jumps, I already knew we’d finish things off well here today. The time was a bit tight, but Zilia has such a big canter that we’ve never really had any problems there,” said a delighted Dehn. After the dressage, he and his 14-year-old mare were still in fourth place and had already moved up one place in the cross-country. In the end, the clear round in the show jumping course proved decisive – the pair, who had already won the ‘Preis der Besten’ just a few weeks ago, were penalised just 27.3 penalty points. For the 17-year-old schoolboy, it was his second appearance at a German U18 Championship. Luke Vogelsänger from Horn-Bad Meinberg and C’est Evie by Caretino-Quintero (Horst Günter Kruse, Zingst), line 5329, took the bronze. As the ‘overnight leaders’, they were the last to start the show jumping. However, a ‘net roll’ at the third jump prevented them from winning the title. ‘She still jumped brilliantly; a mistake can happen quickly and the others deserved it just as much,’ said the 17-year-old, who was competing in his second German Championship in Kreuth.
They fought their way to the top of the extremely strong German dressage field and were rewarded with a nomination as the reserve pair for the Olympic Games in Tokyo: Annabelle by Conteur-Linaro (Günther Fielmann, Schierensee), line 776, and Helen Langehanenberg. “I’ll admit, the nerves were really getting to me. No, to be honest, they were enormous,” said the rider. “Because the Olympic Games are simply every athlete’s dream. And although I would have thought it was still too early last year, this year I did have a bit of hope that we might be able to put ourselves forward for the team. And then Mausi delivered and really improved from competition to competition. And I’m pretty sure her development is far from over. Unbelievable!”
