Saturday was an eventful day for Holsteiner Verband Vermarktungs und Auktions GmbH. The company had no fewer than two foal auctions on its schedule – one at the Springflut Festival in Hörup and one at the CSIO in Falsterbo, Sweden. In Hörup, Hörup’s Heartbreaker by Heartbreaker emerged as the top-priced foal, whilst in Falsterbo it was Stockholm by Catoki that attracted the most interest.
It was a long bidding battle between two interested parties on site that sparked the excitement around Hörup’s Heartbreaker. The son of the legendary Heartbreaker is out of Madmoiselle de Muze by Elvis ter Putte, who in turn is out of the dam of Mylord Carthago and Bakmako de Muze. The Peters/Bärtschi breeding partnership (Bargenstedt) presented the prospective stallion. This genetic rarity was worth 25,000 euros to buyers from North Frisia. Quick Classic HaS by Quick Star-Qlassic Bois Margot, from the Holstein line 104A, also fetched a very good price. Hof am Sylvert, owned by the Rörden family (Witsum/Föhr), presented this colt at the auction, which was sold for 15,500 euros. Sunflower, a daughter of United Way-Casall (Silke Zuba, Wesselburen), was also in high demand. The filly from line 18A2 boasts numerous 1.50-metre and 1.60-metre show jumpers among her relatives. On average, buyers spent around 11,430 euros on a foal at the auction in Hörup.
“This evening we held the fourth edition of our joint auction with the Holsteiner Verband as part of the Springflut Festival,” summarised competition director Stephan Johannsen following the auction. “We can be very satisfied with the result. I am particularly pleased that most of the foals here were purchased by customers on site and that some will even remain in the region.”

For the first time in the 55-year history of the Falsterbo Derby, this prestigious event at the Swedish five-star competition had to be cancelled. Heavy rain showers had forced the organisers to take this step – in the interests of safety for horses and riders, all competition in the main show jumping arena was cancelled for the entire Saturday of the competition. The Holsteiner Foal Auction went ahead despite the adverse conditions.
The most expensive of the 13 foals was a daughter of Catoki out of a Quiran dam, catalogue number 7. The filly, aptly named Stockholm, was bred by Jörg Harder (Wewelsfleth), line 2554. A buyer from Australia paid 16,000 euros for this rare daughter of Catoki. Her family also includes international competition horses such as Corint by Coronado (Christopher Frazer/GBR). For 12,000 euros, catalogue number 10, Zurano B by Zirocco Blue–Cascadello I (Jens Böckenhauer, Boostedt), line 18A2, will be making his home in Sweden. These buyers have once again secured Holsteiner foals at the traditional show in their home country and were delighted with this prospective stallion by Zirocco Blue. Catalogue number 3 will also be moving to Sweden: Quality Star by Quaprice Bois Margot out of Cornet Obolensky. The colt was bred and presented by Stutsborg Youngster from Lynge in Denmark and sold for 10,000 euros. He descends from the mare line of Goriana van Klapscheut (Pilar Lucrecia Cordon/ESP). On average, the foals sold for around 9,800 euros. “The organisers have gone all out today to ensure we could hold the auction despite everything. I would like to thank them for that,” says auctioneer Felix Flinzer. “And also the Wree and Forsman families, who have supported this collaboration for years with dedication and passion, and made it possible in the first place.”
