Holstein’s largest foal auction of 2022 was held as a hybrid event at the association’s headquarters in Elmshorn – the collection comprised 70 foals, two of which topped the auction with a hammer price of 25,000 euros.
One of these was catalogue number 59, Paisley by United Way-Colman (line 2543), bred by Klaus Thiedemann Jr. (Oesterwurth): The direct dam line of this filly has produced, for example, the successful sport horses Celine LS la Silla by Quintero (Jim Ifko/CAN) and Casper vd Rode Poelhoeve by Casall, who is currently winning numerous honours under Giulia Martinengo Marquet (ITA). Paisley was sold to long-standing regular customers at Holsteiner Auctions, who are based in France. Furthermore, the colt with catalogue number 62, Unbelievable by Uriko-Colman (line 1916; Boie Behrens, Volsemenhusen), was also worth 25,000 euros to his new owners from Hungary. The grey colt named Unbelievable is by the Derby winner Carassina by Concerto II (Thomas Kleis/GER) as his second dam, who, when paired with Uriko, had already produced the licensed stallion United Way. Furthermore, the line has produced performers such as Locato S by Locato (Walter Gabathuler/CHE), Zoa-Wodka by Cartani (Jason Smith/GBR) and Chika’s Way by Caretino (Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann/GER) from the mare line that traces back to the famous Wodka II. Catalogue number 34 is set to move to Italy: the filly Contenance by Clarimo-Caretino was snapped up by auctioneer Hendrik Schulze-Rückamp for 20,500 euros. Nine further lots also fetched 10,000 euros or more, such as catalogue number 40, Viarado MW by Vigado-Diarado (ZG Meyn-Winder), from line 4847 of the Olympic horse Quel Homme de Hus, which was secured by Holsteiner Verband Hengsthaltungs GmbH for 12,000 euros. The average price for the foals was around 8,600 euros.
“We deliberately selected more foals for this elite auction,” reports auction manager Roland Metz. “As there will be no further online auctions this year. Despite the increased number, the average price has settled back at the 2019 level, and with a sales rate of 78 per cent, we have achieved a satisfactory result.”
