Thermochip – a dual-function transponder

MSD has developed a microchip designed to combine the identification of equines with an easy-to-use temperature measurement. This so-called ‘Thermochip’ is already in use on large-scale farms in Germany.

This microchip is now set to be used as part of a pilot project with the Holsteiner and Trakehner Breeders’ Associations. This trial phase will be accompanied by a scientific study examining the accuracy and efficiency of the Thermochip. In addition to conventional microchips, the Thermochip not only allows the identification number to be read but also measures the body temperature at the implantation site simultaneously. As the measurement is quicker and less stressful than rectal temperature measurement, it can be used, for example, for continuous monitoring. The identification number can still be read using all conventional readers. However, the additional temperature measurement can only be carried out using readers manufactured by MSD.

Breeders interested in taking part in the pilot project should be expecting at least three foals to be registered in the 2023 breeding year. Further information is available from the Holsteiner Verband office in Kiel (email wessel@holsteiner-verband.de).
