Press release from MSD Animal Health
Spring is slowly approaching and the first foals are being born, or the foaling season is just around the corner. For this reason, the livestock owner portal Tierhalter-Wissen.de, with the kind support of MSD Animal Health, is offering breeders the opportunity to take part in a free online training course. The course will be led by Prof. Dr Axel Wehrend, a veterinary surgeon from the Veterinary Clinic for Reproductive Medicine and Neonatology at Justus Liebig University in Giessen.
In this training course, which features numerous interactive exercises, Prof. Wehrend will discuss healthy foals as well as the recognition of birth complications and neonatal diseases, so that you, as a breeder, can act swiftly if necessary and improve the foal’s prognosis. This is because what starts out as a harmless issue can very quickly become life-threatening for a foal.
For this reason, the Giessen Early Detection Protocol was developed under his leadership and is presented in detail here. An integrated scoring system provides quick and reliable information on the state of health of the newborn foal. Furthermore, the reproduction expert discusses the proper care of the newborn before presenting the most common diseases. A fact sheet on foals, containing key physiological values, as well as the Giessen Early Detection Schemes, are available for download as an additional service. Upon completion of the training course, you will receive a training certificate which you can print out.
This online training course is designed to contribute to better animal health and is intended to support horse breeders. Thanks to the kind support of MSD Animal Health, which will inform you about the benefits of the Thermochip for foal identification and lifelong temperature monitoring, you can take part in this training course free of charge.
