The Oldekop family from Schönwalde has been breeding Holstein show jumpers for four generations. It is a true family business, where the passion and pride in their breeding programme quickly become apparent as the family’s youngest son, Jendrik (23), leads the way through the stable corridor and can recite the pedigrees of the approximately 20 horses back through many generations.
Caren and Dirk Oldekop own a butcher’s shop in Schönwalde, which is situated in Holstein Switzerland. Dirk’s grandfather Bruno and his father Horst were already ambitious Holsteiner breeders, and Dirk has successfully carried on the tradition with his wife Caren: A total of 96 horses registered with the Holsteiner Verband were born on the farm, which features a small indoor arena, an all-weather arena and a horse walker. “My first broodmare was Borana by Lord-Othello from the Thiedemann line 2543. I’m a huge fan of Lord, because his offspring possess a willingness to perform and natural ability,” explains Dirk Oldekop (59). “In my view, Lord and Caretino have had such a positive influence on Holsteiner breeding that, to this day, we’re very keen to have mares with these stallions in their pedigree here. They have the right attitude, charisma and are agile.” The first foal he bred himself was by Caletto I; gradually, Oldekop added further filly foals from high-performance lines to his stock. Thus, mares from lines 18B1 and 3389 arrived in Schönwalde decades ago; lines 2137, 741 and 4965 are now also part of the mare herd.
Among others, five State Premium mares and three licensed stallions were born here and became the flagship of the family’s breeding programme. Notable mares included, for example, the purchased Haamoon by Leonid out of Wisma by Caletto II (J. Hermann Claussen, Neuenkirchen), line 3389, a half-sister to Cassini I. Amongst others, she produced the licensed stallions Caleri I and II by Calido I and, when paired with the home-bred Acodetto I by Acorado (line 2543), the mare Waamoon. She, in turn, is the dam of several sport horses successful internationally up to 1.50 metres, such as Cassamoon, Dubai and Casalor – all by Casall. Acodetto I is out of Louvre by Contender, whose dam is Oldekop’s first mare, Borana by Lord. Acodetto I is now owned by the Maas J. Hell stud farm in Klein Offenseth and has himself sired three licensed sons and produced successful competition offspring all over the world. The foundation mare Borana also produced Patschuli by Coronado, who excelled internationally at 1.55-metre level.

In jedem Jahr kommen drei bis fünf Fohlen zur Welt und eine neue Generation von Zuchtstuten reift in den Stallungen und auf den Weiden heran. „Unsere Stuten sollen sich erst im Sport beweisen, bevor sie in die Zucht gehen“, so Jendrik Oldekop, der selbst bis 1,40 Meter-Springen erfolgreich geritten hat. Für die Ausbildung und Turniervorstellung ist Jendrik Oldekops Lebensgefährtin Katharina Selmer zuständig. Im vergangenen Jahr platzierte sie unter anderem die Balou du Rouet-Calido I-Tochter Ilida beim Landeschampionat in Elmshorn im Finale der Vierjährigen. „Unsere Zuchtstuten wünschen wir uns etwas blütiger, rittig und mit gutem Fundament“, sagt Jendrik Oldekop. Gemeinsam mit einem Freund der Familie aus den Niederlanden, Jan Hulshof, hat er ebenfalls eine Züchtergemeinschaft, in der unter anderem der Cassini-Stamm 3389 weitergepflegt wird. „Vermögende Hengste sind oftmals eher schwer, weshalb wir in blütigen Stuten eine gute Ergänzung sehen“, fügt Dirk Oldekop hinzu. Vater und Sohn sind sich einig in ihren Zuchtzielen: „Wir brauchen typvolle und bewegungsstarke Pferde mit viel Vermögen – der Sport wird immer schneller und schwere Pferde bringen uns nicht weiter. Bei der Hengstwahl verlassen wir uns oft auf unser Bauchgefühl. Und wenn die Anpaarung gelungen ist, zanken wir uns darum, wessen Idee das war“, lacht Dirk Oldekop, der seit zwölf Jahren Delegierter des Körbezirks Ostholstein ist.
