Eventing fans turned their attention to Luhmühlen in Lower Saxony this weekend: the German Championships – held as part of a CCI4* event – took place there, alongside one of the world’s most demanding five-star eventing competitions. A Holsteiner, London by Landos-Quinar, won the top event with Laura Collett (GBR) in the saddle.
“He performed perfectly three times over,” said Collett, who completed the competition with her dressage score. “He just keeps getting better and better. I’m so particularly proud of our partnership because we’ve been working together for many years and he always wants to do everything just right,” she told Horse&Hound. London’s breeder, Ocke Riewerts, was naturally also particularly proud; he travelled from the island of Föhr to Luhmühlen to see the gelding from line 3200. Fourth place also went to Luke by Landos-Limbus (Georg Clausen, Rabenkirchen), line 13A, and Boyd Martin (USA)
A medal at the German Championships was within touching distance for Nickel by Numero Uno-Lorentin I (Hindrick Stüvel, Rosengarten), line 4303, with Julia Krajewski in the saddle. The pair were already leading the German Championship standings after the dressage, then completed the cross-country section of the four-star event with ease and galloped fresh to the finish. Two knock-downs in the show jumping section nevertheless meant an excellent third place in the overall standings – as Krajewski was competing with another horse and secured the championship title with that horse, she was no longer included in the medal rankings with the Holsteiner Nickel. She expressed her great admiration for the performance of the nine-year-old: “Luhmühlen is only his third four-star event. He has impressed here from day one and I am incredibly proud of him,” said Krajewski happily.
Show Jumping
In Opglabbeek (BEL), Con Quidam RB by Quinar-Cardino (ZG Bröcking, Borken), line 1446, proved once again to be a reliable performer: Ridden by Sanne Thijssen (NED), he took silver in the 1.55-metre show jumping class, having won a 1.50-metre class the previous day.
Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann (GER) celebrated first and third places in Lichtenvoorde (NED). Cornela by Cornet Obolensky-Caretino, bred by her sire Friedrich, had won the Balve Championships just the week before and once again performed at the very highest level in the 1.50-metre and 1.55-metre classes.
C-Jay by Carthago-Contender (Hobe Bernhard, Kollmar), line 318D2, and Johannes Ehning (GER) had also won a class in Balve and repeated their victory in Lichtenvoorde over 1.45 metres. In addition, the former Holsteiner auction horse Herr Lucio by Legolas-Cero I (Ahsbahs GbR, Bokel), line 275, finished fourth with Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA).
Dressage
At the Future Champions young riders’ competition in Hagen, the Concreto-Coriano son Consus (Peter Nagel-Tornau, Wangels), line 6605, and Caroline Locklair (GER) shone in the arena. After she and the former Holstein auction horse finished eighth in the Young Riders’ Tour at the start of the competition and fifth in the individual standings, they won the final freestyle.
