Last weekend was dominated by the German Championships in Balve. In the men’s competition, Casallco (by Casall Contender, ridden by F.J.M. Vrenken, NL-Maasbree) shone under Philip Rüping. In Friday’s qualifier, the pair had already impressed across the board, finishing in fourth place. On the day of the final, the pair raised their game once again and finished the German Championships with the silver medal. Fifth place also went to a Holsteiner mare, D-Cassina by Cassini I out of Caretino (Carsten Harms, Rastede) ridden by Maximilian Lill, ahead of the nine-year-old son of Casalito by Quidam de Revel, Coolio 42 – bred by Martina Wirtz Hohenzieritz – who secured sixth place under his rider Marcel Marschall.
There was also a medal for Holstein in the women’s classification of the German Championships (S***). Angelique Rüsen secured the bronze medal with the ten-year-old Calvino 16 by Castelan II-Literat (Hans-Hinrich Hansen, Ottenbüttel), picking up just one penalty point in each of the first and second rounds of the final. Another placing went to the mare D-Coroquada I by Contender-Coronado, bred by Manfred Tummes of Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, who finished ninth under Karin Ernsting. The association stallion Million Dollar, ridden by Sophie Hinners, finished tenth in the ladies’ competition.
In Sopot, Poland, the focus last weekend was on the Nations Cup. Two Holstein horses were part of the Swiss team, which secured the bronze medal. One was the gelding Quincassi by Quintero-Cassini I (Hermann Gempf, Stelle-Wittenwurth), ridden by Niklaus Schurtenberger, and the other was Nanu II by New Time-Corofino (Dieter Friedrich, Quickborn), ridden by Elin Ott. In Friday’s Grand Prix (1.60 metres), Quincassi and Niklaus Schurtenberger also finished in third place. Chepetta, a daughter of Chepetto Cash bred by Silke Zuba of Wesselburen, finished seventh in the Grand Prix under Kevin Staut, ahead of Quintair by Quintero-Con Air (Torsten Gripp, Willenscharen) ridden by Kristaps Neretnieks from Austria, who secured ninth place.
At the CSIO3* show in Drammen, Norway, Cool Quarz by Quarz-Cassini I (Gundula Henningsen, Rantrum) and his rider Donatas Janciauskas (LTU) won the 1.50-metre Grand Prix. Tina Lund from Denmark also finished fifth in the Grand Prix on her Holsteiner gelding Carallo by Corrado I-Con Air (Jürgen Reimers, York).
In the Netherlands, more specifically in Geesteren, many Holsteiner horses also achieved successful placings. In Sunday’s 1.55-metre Grand Prix, Dywis HH by Toulon-Corofino II (Peter Huismann, NL Rouven) took sixth place under Maikel van der Vleuten. In the 1.45-metre show jumping class, the Holsteiner Quo Vadis DKG by Q-Verdi-Contender (Dr Klaus Gumpert, Grevenkop) took third place under Annelies Vorsselmans (BEL). The nine-year-old gelding was discovered at the 2019 Holsteiner Elite Riding Horse Auction and is successfully making his mark in top-level sport.
