A sensation took place this afternoon in Klein Flottbek: the former Holsteiner auction horse, Dacara E by Cancara (Gerd Eggers, Stadum), triumphed in the German Show Jumping Derby in Klein Flottbek. In the saddle was her regular rider and owner, Cassandra Orschel. The Hamburg-based rider, competing for Poland, and her eleven-year-old Holsteiner mare are not actually derby specialists at all, but are instead highly successful in ‘normal’ show jumping competitions up to 1.60 metres. However, this weekend they showed their home crowd that wall jumps, birch oxers, Holstein course jumps and the like are no problem for them. In the jump-off, the pair produced the only clear round and could well have been awarded the style prize as well. Cassandra Orschel discovered the chestnut mare at the Holstein Spring Auction in 2016. “She’s not exactly easy, has a mind of her own and you always have to make compromises. But she’s also an incredible fighter; she jumps from any position, has an incredible amount of power, and no obstacle has ever been too high for her,” said Cassandra Orschel in an earlier interview. Dacara proved that once again today. “I never expected to win today,” said the rider, moved to tears by her friends, after clinching victory in the 91st German Show Jumping Derby. In sixth, seventh and 14th places were three further horses bearing the Holsteiner brand: Cross Keys by Casall-Sunset Boulevard xx (Jens Kotthaus, Schönwalde) and Kai Rüder, Cyrus L by Cartani-Calypso II (Werner Löffler, Arlewatt) and Stefan Jensen, as well as Can Ya Macan (Gerald Lennaerts, BEL-Peer) and Shane Breen (IRL).
The competition in Hamburg also formed part of the Global Champions Tour. In the Grand Prix, three Holsteiners finished in the top 10. In seventh and eighth place were two horses bred by Ronald Nowee (NED-JJ Oude Niedrop): Cristel by Diamant de Semilly out of Cento, ridden by Nils Bruynseels (BEL), and Charly by Calido I out of Askari, ridden by Jonny Pals (NED). Sanne Thijssen (NED) and Con Quidam by Quinar–Cardino (ZG Bröcking, Borken) came ninth. In the Hamburg Championship, Philip Rüping and Casallco by Casall–Contender (Frans Vrenken, NED-Maasbree) took fourth place.
At the same time, a CSIO5* event took place in Rome, on the legendary Piazza di Siena. A number of Holsteiners competed there in the Nations Cup over 1.60 metres. Jerome Guerys’ tried-and-tested Quel Homme de Hus by Quidam de Revel-Candillo (Dr Andreas Kosicki, Berlin) won silver with the Belgian team, whilst Long John Silver by Lasino, bred by Peter Burmeister and Jur Vrierling, took bronze with the Dutch team, and Confu by Contact Me-Cambridge (Kai Gerken, Lasbek) came fourth for the USA under Laura Kraut. In the 1.60-metre Grand Prix, two Holsteiners shone in second and third place. One was Limbridge by Limbus out of Cambridge (Ralf Pawlowski, Heidenheim) ridden by Jana Wargers, who pocketed 90,000 euros in prize money. The other was Cochello by Casall out of Cartani (Reimer Detlef Hennings, Bendorf), ridden by Piergiorgio Bucci (ITA), who took third place. This also earned them 67,500 euros.
