For over 30 years, the Kummetz family’s Kriseby stud in Lübeck has consistently produced horses that go on to enjoy success in international competition. Several of them share the same dam: Udine I by Lerano.

Udine, a representative of line 5401, was born in 2004. Manfred Kummetz, who passed away a few days ago at the age of 77 following a long illness, paired Lerano with his mare My Dream by Calido I – a combination the breeder chose a total of six times for My Dream. He had previously purchased Lerano from the Holsteiner Verband. Under Herbert Blöcker, the Lord son gained his first competition experience in eventing at M** level. “There were many qualities I greatly appreciated in Lerano. He was tall, tough, had an excellent attitude and was incredibly willing – qualities he often passed on to his offspring,” Manfred Kummetz summarised just a few months ago. The stallion competed in the German Show Jumping Derby in Hamburg no fewer than six times, riding with various riders. Lerano finished in the top ten on four occasions: twice under Inga Czwalina and once each with Carsten-Otto Nagel and Manuela Schweizer. “When Lerano died, he left a huge void for us. Not only did he make a significant contribution to breeding at Kriseby Stud, he was also a member of the family,” recalled Kummetz.

From a sporting perspective, GK Let’s Go by Lerano, born in 2007, is undoubtedly the most successful of My Dreams’ offspring. With the Diederichsmeyer sisters in the saddle, the gelding enjoyed success up to 1.50 metres in show jumping. From a breeding perspective, however, his full sister Udine stands out in particular. No fewer than six of her offspring are currently competing at a high level in the sport. Leading the way are the two full siblings GK Coco Chanel and GK Curacao, whose sire is Clarimo. With Manuela Bruhn-Kisse in the saddle, GK Coco Chanel, born in 2008, enjoyed his first successes in show jumping classes, finishing fourth at the State Championships in Elmshorn at the age of six. Later, he competed all over the world, first with Emanuele Camilli (ITA) and then with the Irish rider Conor Swail. In show jumping up to 1.60 metres, the pair won and placed at events including Tryon, Wellington and Vancouver. Second place in the historic Spruce Meadows Grand Prix is certainly one of the highlights of Coco Chanel’s career.
In 2011, another son of Clarimo was born in Udine: GK Curacao. A horse who is well known in Holstein and far beyond its borders. Under Carsten-Otto Nagel, the grey has already enjoyed numerous successes. For example, last year when the pair won the Grand Prix at Horses&Dreams in Hagen a.T.W. over 1.55 metres, or when they finished second in the Nations Cup with the German team at the five-star show in Falsterbo, Sweden. GK Finette by Casalito was also born in 2013. This daughter of Udine gained her first international experience alongside Philipp Weishaupt and Michael Jung, before moving to be ridden by the American Alex Matz in 2022, where she has achieved placings up to 1.50 metres. “By the time Clarimo came to the attention of breeders as a sire, we had already used him several times. I think he’s a good match for our mares and the 5401 line. The concentration of Caletto II blood in the pedigree simply won me over,” said Manfred Kummetz, explaining his decision to use Clarimo so frequently. This year, Udine has another Clarimo foal at her side.

legacy At Kriseby Stud, highly successful horses have been born over generations. Line 5401, from which, amongst others, the two internationally successful half-sisters to My Dream – GK Ilona and GK Helena (both ridden by Inga Czwalina) – hail, is part of this success. His son, Wulf-Heiner Kummetz, took over the original stud on Krummesser Landstraße in Lübeck last year and will continue the breeding programme in his father’s spirit, together with his wife Nina and their three children.
