In the next instalment of the series entitled ‘Holsteiner Heroines’, it is the turn of Ramelle, a daughter of Coriano. She is the dam of numerous sport horses that have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, and she always leaves her mark on them.
Ramelle was born in 2001 in Kürten, in the Rhineland, at Anja Haasbach’s stud. She produced several foals out of the Coriano-Cassini I-Caretino daughter before her then-husband and his two friends, Josef Unkelbach and Elmar Pollmann-Schweckhorst, took over Ramelle’s breeding programme. Amongst others, Zypern III by Casall comes from Anja Haasbach’s breeding programme. Riden by various riders, the mare, born in 2007, enjoyed success in show jumping up to 1.60 metres, including with Jur Vrieling (NED).

Later, Ramelle – a representative of the Holsteiner line 890 – was bred several times to Quintero and Verdi. These matings produced a number of outstanding show jumpers. For example, Quintop and Qrimella by Quintero, both of whom have enjoyed success up to advanced level under Philipp Pollmann-Schweckhorst and Maximilian Vogel. And with the Verdi daughter Veramelle, Philipp Pollmann-Schweckhorst has a daughter of Ramelle under his saddle who has been successful in 1.45-metre classes. The Pollmann-Schweckhorst family also have a young mare by Lord Pezi, out of Veramelle, in their stables. She is set to pave the way for their son Philipp’s future as a breeder. Furthermore, Marcel Marschall has a son of Cornet Obolensky out of Ramelle, whose future looks promising.

“My friends Ottmar Haasbach, Josef Unkelbach and I have been maintaining the 890 line together since the 1970s. Time and again, we’ve supported one another in this endeavour,” says Elmar Pollmann-Schweckhorst, describing their joint breeding work. For example, Gerco Schröder’s (NED) World and European Team Champion, Eurocommerce Berlin by Cassini I (Josef Unkelbach, Cologne), comes from this direct dam line.
“We’ve been very fortunate with this line and Ramelle. She has passed on her traits with absolute consistency. All her offspring are outstanding performers and display the classic Holsteiner type,” says Elmar Pollmann-Schweckhorst, describing her breeding lineage.
A few years ago, Ramelle changed hands. In the Netherlands, she has produced further offspring – partly with the aid of modern reproductive techniques. From her mating with Casall – a full sister to Zypern – a filly was sold a few years ago for 25,000 euros at the Flanders Foal Auction.
