Holsteiner of the Month for September: Long John Silver

The Holsteiner of the Month for September is named after a pirate from the famous novel *Treasure Island*; this large-framed grey gelding from line 2896 is called Long John Silver. Throughout the 2022 season, the Lasino-Corrado I-Caletto II, bred by Peter Burmeister of Wangels, has been a regular fixture at the world’s most prestigious show jumping venues alongside his rider Jur Vrieling. The pair competed at 5* competitions in Stockholm, Aachen, St Gallen, Aachen, Falsterbo and, for example, Rome. And they did so with great success. In the Nations Cup at Falsterbo, for example, Long John Silver and Jur Vrieling completed both rounds without any jumping faults, thereby playing a key role in the Dutch team’s second-place finish. However, the Holsteiner and Vrieling celebrated their greatest success to date at the World Championships in Herning in mid-August. With a clear round in the first round and just two penalty points for time in the second, the pair were one of the mainstays of the Dutch team, which won the silver medal – a team that, alongside Long John Silver, also featured the two Holsteiners Con Quidam (Sanne Thjissen) and Monaco (Harrie Smolders).
Hannes Prehl had introduced the Lasino son to the sport before Denise Svensson prepared him for more demanding challenges. The newly crowned World Championship runner-up eventually joined Jur Vrieling’s stable through the mediation of Holger Hetzel.
