The Holsteiner of the Month for March is a mare who has already achieved a great deal, not only as a sport horse but also as a broodmare. We are talking about the 19-year-old Queen Mary by Contendro I–Caretino–Corofino I–Constant from line 6874. Like her dam, Queen Mary was born at Joachim Tietz’s stables in Diekhusen.

Before her competitive career, she gave birth to two foals. And both of them have already followed in their dam’s sporting footsteps. One is Queen Waltraud by Quidam de Revel, who is enjoying success in international show jumping up to 1.55 metres under Christin Wascher. The other is King Clooney by Canturo, who initially competed with Johanna Huesmann and Hilmar Meyer and now, in the USA under Adam Cramer, is doing his famous mother proud in competitions up to 1.45 metres as well as in six-bar jumping.

With Queen Mary, it is as is so often the case in breeding: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – her dam, Carefina, won two silver medals at the European Young Riders Championships in 2006 and 2007 with Felix Hassmann in the saddle. And her fourth dam, Zomaga by Rebel Z, who was also born in Dieckhusen, is the dam of the successful show jumper and licensed stallion Che Guevara (Jörg Oppermann). Queen Mary herself has so far earned 396,000 euros in show jumping. With her regular rider Jan Wernke, she has won, amongst other things, the Grand Prix events at Riesenbeck and Frankfurt. Furthermore, she helped Wernke secure the title at the German Youth Championships in 2010. She crowned her career when Queen Mary was named Holstein’s most successful show jumper of 2020.
