Whilst Olympic medals were being contested in the dressage arena in Tokyo, the young show jumpers held their European Championships this weekend in Vilamoura, Portugal. The young Belgian talents put in a strong performance, clinching the gold medals in the team competition across all three age groups. In the young riders’ team, two Holsteiners in particular played a key role in the victory. One was Classic Touch DH by Casall-Corrado I (Johann Peter Lass, Leck), ridden by Thibeau Spits, and the other was Casillas van de Helle by Casall-Corrado I (Dr Konrad Bartjen, Wacken), ridden by Alexander Housen. The Irish silver-medal-winning team also featured Clyde VA by Caretino-Quintero (Manfred v. Allwörden, Grönwohld) and Jason Foley. The British team, which won the bronze medal, included Ornellaia (a daughter of For Pleasure and Calato, owned by Harm Thormählen, Kollmar) and Sienna Charles. In the Swiss juniors’ silver-medal-winning team, Silver Surfer by Casall-Levisto (Peter Rauert, Fehmarn) also contributed to the medal with two clear rounds. Géraldine Straumann was in the saddle of the grey, which Inga Czwalina had once introduced to the sport.
A leg of the Global Champions Tour was held at the Berliner Sommergarten. Here, on Friday, the Egyptian rider Nayel Nassar and Coronado by Cassini-Accord II (Karl-Heinz Markussen, Hochviöl) caught the eye with a victory in a 1.45-metre competition. In Friday’s GCT show jumping (1.55 metres), Christian Ahlmann also secured sixth place with the nine-year-old Calvino by Castelan-Literat (Hans-Hinrich Hansen, Ottenbüttel). In the Berlin Championship (1.50 metres) on Sunday afternoon, fourth place went to Maximilian Weishaupt and Nexus by Nekton-Calando I (Dieter Pingel, Altenmoor).
Holsteiner horses also enjoyed numerous successes at the CSIO4* in Warsaw (Poland). Ridden by the Swiss rider Niklaus Schurtenberger, for example, C-Steffra by Clarimo-Lavall I (Gerd Carstensen, Hörup) won a 1.55-metre show jumping class. Markus Renzel had trained the Holsteiner mare and developed her all the way to international competition. Carleyle (by Connor-For Pleasure) (Josef Unkelbach, Cologne) finished sixth with the Irish rider David Simpson, whilst Lacalito by Legolas-Cancara (Dr Gerd Ottersky, Brunsbüttel), ridden by the Danish rider Zascha Nygaard Andreasen, came ninth.
