Licensing in Spring
At the licensing, the stallion entered for grading will also be shown under saddle. The stallion licensing and stallion book registration is held on 17 April 2026 at the Elmshorn Holsteiner Verband facility.
The presentation under rider is compulsory for 4-year-old and older stallions. The registered 3-year-old stallions will not be presented under rider.
A prerequisite for the admission of all stallions is proof of the absence of EVA.
The application date (16.03.2026) is a non-extendable deadline!
The Verband der Züchter des Holsteiner Pferdes e.V., Dr. Astrid Behrens, Westerstr. 93, 25336 Elmshorn must have received the application along with the following documents by 16 März 2026:
- Stallion Performance Test result (50- or 70-day-test)
- Results of the Aptitude Test (Short VA, 14- or 30-day-test and/or stallion sport test)
- Competition results (current FN record or record from a recognized equestrian sports organization)
- Result of the WFFS test
The following fees will be invoiced upon receipt of the application:
- Processing fee: 100 €
- Licensing fee: 250 €
- Photo fee: 54,57 €
For Thoroughbred stallions from outside Germany not registered in the ADGB of the Direktorium für Vollblutzucht und Rennen in Köln, the following documents must be enclosed:
- equine passport
- extract from the issuing jockey club’s studbook
- certificate of export
- silhouette drawn by a vet

Assessment of a stallion’s hereditary potential
To assess a stallion’s hereditary potential, the results of the current breeding value estimation are published annually.
At the end of each breeding year, every breeder receives the breeding values for their breeding stock (stallions and mares) along with the herd report.
The breeding value provides information about a horse’s genetic predisposition, which cannot be directly discerned from observed performance. In breeding value estimation, environmental factors such as the horse’s age, the quality of the rider and the training regime are separated from the genetic predisposition. The accuracy of the breeding value estimation indicates the reliability of the breeding value and is expressed as a percentage.
